Routine Dental
Health Examinations

  • Regular dental health examinations, or Check Up’s are a must and form the basis of our preventative dental care plan. Even with the perfect oral hygiene care you can still develop dental problems that you may not be able to spot by yourself in your own bathroom mirror.

We will give you a thorough oral examination, with oral cancer screening as standard. Preventing gum disease, tooth decay and helping you maintain a clean and healthy mouth. We strongly believe that prevention is better than cure and recommend a Dental health examination at least every 6 months to ensure problems are caught early on and treated when they are minimal, instead of waiting until it hurts and a more drastic and costly solution is required.

Dental Emergencies

  • Dental emergencies can happen unexpectedly and should never be ignored. During our opening hours, we allocate daily emergency slots to ensure you receive the earliest available appointment. For plan members, we typically address dental emergencies on the same day, especially if you contact us promptly after 8:00 AM

    Identifying a Dental Emergency

An urgent dental appointment not only provides immediate relief but can also prevent the need for more extensive treatment down the line, potentially saving teeth from loss due to infections.

The following conditions are classified as dental emergencies:

    • Facial or jaw swelling.

    • Severe pain disrupting sleep or daily activities.

    • Bleeding persisting for more than 20 minutes.

    • Controlled bleeding resulting from facial trauma.

    • Knocked-out tooth.

    • Broken tooth causing mouth pain, especially if it has a sharp edge catching on soft tissues.

    When to seek A&E attention:

If you experience the following symptoms, it is advisable to go to A&E promptly:

    • Facial swelling affecting breathing or mouth opening.

    • Trauma leading to vomiting, loss of consciousness, or blurred vision.

    • Significant bleeding from any part of the mouth.

Hygienist Treatments

  • Maintaining healthy gums is fundamental to sustaining overall dental wellness. Routine dental hygiene appointments, in conjunction with general dental check-ups, are essential for the long-term preservation of dental health.

What to expect at the hygienist:

Hygienist appointments involve a thorough assessment of gum health and a meticulous cleaning procedure known as a scale and polish. This process targets the removal of plaque and tartar (accumulated harmful bacteria) above the gum line. If left unaddressed, this buildup can escalate into advanced gum disease, known as periodontitis, ultimately leading to tooth loss. Hygienists also play an integral educational role, offering guidance on proper flossing techniques and recommending toothbrushes tailored to your individual tooth structure and shape.

    Benefits of Hygienist appointments:

    • Regular hygienist visits help prevent gum disease.

    • Hygienists advise on modifying habits like smoking and alcohol consumption that can

    • Inflame gums and lead to tooth loss.

    • Routine scale and polish treatments remove harmful plaque and tartar, keeping your breath fresh.

    • Regular appointments identify and address potential issues early, avoiding more complex and costly treatments later.

Mouth Cancer Screening

  • Regular mouth cancer screening appointments are crucial for early detection and prompt treatment. High-risk individuals, due to age or lifestyle factors, should attend scheduled screenings. Your dentist will advise on how often you need these screenings to catch any issues early.

At Westgate Dental Studios, we understand that screening can be worrisome. We provide support, address any concerns, and recommend lifestyle changes to reduce the risk of mouth cancer, helping you implement them.

What to expect during a mouth cancer screening appointment?

    • A comprehensive examination of your mouth will be conducted, with a focus on identifying red or white patches, lumps, and other irregularities that could indicate potential mouth cancer symptoms.

    • Examination of the neck and throat will also be performed, and if any concerning findings arise, a biopsy may be recommended for further investigation.

Tooth Extractions

  • Teeth are renowned for their tenacity and strength, standing as the sturdiest bones in the human body. However, even these robust structures have their limits and may succumb to neglect, damage, and wear over time. In instances of severe decay, irreparable damage, or unmanageable infection, we may recommend the extraction of a tooth.

    What to expect:

When a tooth is visibly above the gum line, removal can be accomplished with forceps. In cases where the tooth is partially or fully impacted, a surgical approach may be necessary, involving the removal of some bone or tissue to facilitate a smoother extraction.

    Benefits of tooth extraction:

    • Alleviation of pain associated with the affected tooth.

    • Prevention of infection spread to neighbouring teeth.

    • Addressing crowding issues for a healthier and cosmetically appealing smile.
